It's a story with fab, fab recipes of an American family living in France who take their French cook back with them to the midwest during the war years. I have copied this excerpt off Amazon

"For more than a dozen years before World War II, the Chamberlain family lived and learned to eat in the tiny cathedral town of Senlis, France. Their Burgundian cook, Clémentine, presided over their kitchen in France, and later in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The alert, good-natured cuisinère is the heroine of Clémentine in the Kitchen, first published in 1943 and happily reissued in the Modern Library Food series. The book is a gem: part gastronomic diary and part cookbook (over 170 recipes are included), it also evokes, perhaps most interestingly, Clémentine's affect on a small town in pre-"gourmet" America, and its influence on her."

http://www.amazon.com/Clementine-Kitchen-Modern-Library-Food/dp/0375756647/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264777146&sr=8-1

I agree with the Ruth Reichl and M K Fisher recommendations and can also recommend "Bloody Delicious" by Joan Campbell - she was the editor of Austrailia Food and Wine waaaay back - her stories of growing up as a child and then an adult in Oz are amazing...I can see that the book is pretty expensive in the US though :(

http://www.amazon.com/Bloody-Delicious-Joan-Campbell/dp/186448876X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264777677&sr=1-1

I love scouring second hand bookshops and finding little gems..

Love your blog! I had no idea she had that much of an influence on American cooking--I want to read the book now!

I second the Ruth Reichl books comment--her books were so interesting and juicy. I have 'Never Eat Your Heart Out,' by Judith Moore, but haven't started it yet. My favorites, though, are 'A Year in Provence' and the sequels (though none are anywhere near as great as that first one) by Peter Mayle.Kelly Loy Gilberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07631392902817058541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720533874747570790.post-73376781356892335982010-01-28T18:53:26.133-05:002010-01-28T18:53:26.133-05:00This is a great review and I have added this to my...This is a great review and I have added this to my to-be-read list. Thanks!

I am also completely fascinated by mid-century homemakers, to the point that I had a chapter in my master's thesis on them. Here are some of the books that I love (though not all to do with that time):

Eat My Words: Reading Women’s Lives Through The Cookbooks They Wrote
All of Ruth Reichl's books, but especially Tender At the Bone
Anything by MFK Fisher, but my faves are An Alphabet for Gourmets and How to Cook a Wolf

There is also one that you might find interesting, that has less to do with food and is a bit dated but still interesting and that is More Work For Mother: the Ironies of Household Technology from the Open Hearth to the Microwave by Ruth Schwartz Cowen. I have only read excerpts of it, but it is a fascinating history, both of the technology and the social norms of household chores.Tessa K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10370035306005281479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720533874747570790.post-53356283868520963822010-01-28T17:31:13.011-05:002010-01-28T17:31:13.011-05:00Thanks for sharing! I really love Judith Ryan Hendricks' "Bread Alone," which is fiction — about a woman learning to bake bread while she deals with her divorce. Not the greatest plot summary, but I thought it was great!Carolynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04240207003830677105noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-720533874747570790.post-1200935321529768452010-01-28T16:35:20.386-05:002010-01-28T16:35:20.386-05:00Betty Crocker's take on La Comida Mexicana in ...Betty Crocker's take on La Comida Mexicana in that Bisquick Party Book photo looks interesting. Are those potato chips with the guacamole?!

Regarding Betty's "whiteness" - people find anything and everything offensive!
