Hotels I've Loved: The Charlie Hotel in West Hollywood, Los Angeles

Work has been bringing me to Los Angeles more and more lately, and I've been using each trip as an opportunity to explore different neighborhoods and hotels.

West Hollywood is one of my favorite neighborhoods in LA because of how walkable it is. Restaurants, cafes, shops, bars, theaters, parks--literally everything you could possibly want is within walking distance (or a super short $5 uber ride).

For my most recent trip, I found The Charlie Hotel. Located on a shady and quiet side street, The Charlie Hotel is actually a small complex of charming English-style bungalows that once used to belong to Charlie Chaplin. A number of classic Hollywood stars are rumoured to have lived or at least spent time on the grounds of this gorgeous boutique hotel, including Marilyn Monroe and Gloria Swanson.

The bungalows are all fully-equipped little homes featuring full kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms and private patios. I stayed in one of the smaller bungalows--a one-bedroom suite called The Dylan, and absolutely fell in love with the charming space.

I had a huge king-size bed in a bedroom with tons of windows and french doors separating it from the living room. There was a large bathroom with a washer and dryer, a small, but full kitchen with an eat-in dining area, and an ivy-lined private patio.

Ivy and flower-covered gates separate the bungalows from the street (and each other) for maximum privacy, and while little fountains and sitting areas dot the space in case you feel like wandering around.

I only stayed two nights, but would plan for a longer stay next time. It's the perfect place to make yourself at home or even entertain friends.

Insider Tip
  • Call the hotel or book directly via the website for a sweet bonus package that includes a free gift and welcome treat upon arrival, upgrade if available, guaranteed late checkout, and some other goodies. The lowest rates on the site were exactly the same as what I found on the discount sites, and if you find something better, you can contact management for a matched rate. It's worth it!
