How to Entertain Party Guests with Dietary Restrictions

Last week I did a media tour on behalf of sponsors TruWhip and Edible Arrangements, sharing a few easy holiday entertaining tips and recipe ideas designed to make life easier for the host. During the interviews with various TV and radio stations around the country, I talked about how one of the biggest challenges for hosts this time of year is managing a menu when you have guests with a variety of different dietary restrictions.

Whether you have friends who eat gluten-free, have nut or dairy allergies, are vegan, or are simply trying to stick to a keto or paleo diet plan, it can be tricky trying to find ways to balance a low-fuss menu with making sure all of your guests can eat and enjoy without worrying about food that meets their individual needs.

Here are some of the tips and recipe ideas I shared--hopefully some of them will inspire you and help you with your party planning, too!

Mexican Hot Chocolate Muddy Buddies

There's no need to reinvent the wheel every holiday season. Though magazines and food blogs (yes, mine included!) love to share new and creative recipes each year, the truth is that many of us just crave our classic favorites--especially during the holidays!

But that doesn't mean you have to serve the same thing over and over again. (I love to play in the kitchen way too much for that!)

My secret to holiday entertaining that is both easy and creative is to add just a few small personalized twists to the classics. It's a way of putting a little bit of your own love and creativity into a recipe, without spending hours testing and trying out new things.

Pumpkin Spice Chex Mix + A DIY Chex Mix Bar!

Do you know that last half hour or so just before a holiday party starts? That’s usually when I freak out a little bit.

It’s like time suddenly speeds up, nothing is ready, something always burns or spills or breaks (or burns AND spills AND breaks…eeek!). It’s also the moment when I start to worry that guests are going to show up early to find me in the midst of complete and total disaster.

Does this happen to you, too?

5 Reasons to Get Excited about Fall

As much as I appreciate the beauty of changing seasons, the chance to start again, crunchy leaves, etc., etc., I'm still always a bit sad to say good-bye to the lush languor of summer.

While it's still sunny and 80 degrees in New York right now, things already feel different. Can you feel it?

That said, I'm thankful for things like crisp apples and mulberry-colored dresses, which at least give me something to look forward to.

In an effort to get myself excited for Fall, I brainstormed a few of my favorite things about the new season. Check them out below (there's even a video!)

A Big Messy Sexy Veggie Board

Messy is sexy when it comes to food. Big abundant piles of delicious things. Nothing too precious or precise. People should feel like they can just dive in without messing anything up. Food should be welcoming and available and satisfying and imperfect.

That's what I had in mind when I set out this veggie board for a party I hosted this past weekend.

How to Host a Tiki Party

There are only a few things I love more than a theme party. Especially when it gives me an excuse to dress up in something festive. This year, I got my friends to dig out their prettiest tropical sundresses and Hawaiian shirts for some Polynesian-themed revelry at my Retro Tiki Party.

Scroll down below to see how I pulled it together, and get some inspiration for your next celebration!

The Drinks

The idea to throw this party came about while brainstorming themes for my ongoing "Summer of Punch" recipe collaboration with Smirnoff this year. I've always wanted to throw a retro tiki-style party, and since tiki parties are all about the fun tropical punch drinks, it was a perfect match!

I started out by researching classic tiki cocktails. Typically made with spirits like rum, I mixed things up a bit and created vodka versions that highlighted some of my favorite Smirnoff flavors.

My party bar featured three updated tiki cocktail punches. The overall favorite was definitely the Blue Raspberry Island Punch, made with Smirnoff Raspberry, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, blue curacao, and soda.

I also made a Peach and Passion Fruit Mai Tai using Smirnoff Peach and a Vodka Pina Colada Punch using classic Smirnoff No. 21.

I served the punches in a mix of punch bowls and beverage dispensers with cups, ice, cocktail umbrellas, and garnishes on the side for DIY serving. It's such a relaxed and low-key way to host a party because it allows guests to help themselves while I can focus on food and greeting guests.

Setting up the Tiki Bar
It's always smart to separate your food and drinks as it allows for more flow in your party space. This is especially important if, like me, you're entertaining in an apartment or other small space.

I set my bar in my office, which is just off the main party room.

I started off with a plain surface (in this case, my cleared-off desk!) and covered it with some neutral colored scarves to add texture and color.

I used stacks of books and blocks to add a variety of height to the bar, and added interesting touches like a cute hula girl bottle opener and a vintage style metal Tiki bar sign I found at a discount store.

Set up your punch bowls and other bar accessories ahead of time, then fill them with the beverages at the very last minute. This will save you time, and help keep the drinks cool before guests arrive.

Tiki mugs are a must for any tiki party. You can find real vintage ones at thrift stores or online shops. You can also find sets of inexpensive modern reproductions at party stores. I paid about $3 to $5 each for my mugs.

TIP: Don't feel like you need to buy one for every guest--even just a few to use as decoration (or to hold things like straws, cutlery, or cocktail stirrers) is enough to give it that classic tiki party feel!

The Food
Have fun with the food, but definitely keep it simple. I decided to add a modern twist by making my party a "Tiki Taco Party."

This allowed me to have a mix of fun, but easy dishes that satisfied all my guests. I broke the menu up into Polynesian or pu-pu platter style appetizers and snacks, with a DIY taco bar for the main course.

I created a fun (but easy! I promise!) Pineapple Chutney Cheese Ball that I shaped like a pineapple and decorated with pecans and the real crown from an actual pineapple. Served with plantain chips and rice crackers, it was a popular appetizer that also added to that retro, kitschy atmosphere.

A couple hot appetizers that can be prepped in advance and finished just before serving are always a hit. I went with simple Chinese-Style Pork Spare-Ribs and Spicy Bacon-Wrapped Pineapple Bites, which are a riff on a retro rumaki appetizer.

For the DIY Taco Bar, I offered a choice of roasted and pulled pork, ancho-pomegranate brisket, and a simple black bean and corn salad, as well as blue and yellow corn tortillas.

The meat was easy to prepare a few days in advance in my slow cooker and then reheated just before serving. Anytime you can do stuff in advance for a party, do it! You will be so thankful you did!

For the DIY taco bar toppings I set out bowls of my homemade restaurant-style salsa and homemade pineapple salsa (served in a pineapple bowl!).

I also added some simple toppings like salted red cabbage slaw, cumin-spiced sour cream, cilantro, chopped red onions, guacamole, and cotija cheese.

With a big meal like this, you don't really need a big dessert, but a little something sweet to end the night is always a good idea!

I made these easy Guava Coconut Crumb Bars and set out some additional fresh cut pineapple and watermelon for snacking.

Decorations
Don't feel like you have to spend a lot of money buying fancy decorations! I always recommend looking around your house for objects you already own to create the perfect party scene or tablescape.

Bamboo placemats or table runners, colorful tablecloths or floral napkins can all be pulled into service for this theme.

Another tip?

Just about any souvenir you've ever bought on an island, or beach vacation could work for this party theme. Think about things like large conch shells, sand dollars, stoneware, wooden bowls or serving pieces, or colorful scarves.

If you've ever stayed in a tropical resort or hotel, you might have noticed that it always smells amazing from the minute you step inside.

I like to mimic that with a sweet-smelling coconut or hibiscus candle burning in the bathroom or entryway. Such a subtle touch, but I promise you it really makes an impact.

Add Color with Tropical Fruit and Flowers
My absolute favorite decorative touch is natural tropical fruits. Pineapples, coconuts, bananas, and other tropical fruits make amazing natural and affordable decorations.

I bought a few of each and scattered them around the room.

(The pineapples smell amazing, too, and add to that wonderful island feel.)

The best part? You can chop them up for an amazing fruit salad (or more cocktails!) the next day.

Leis and flower necklaces for your guests are a must for any tiki or Polynesian-themed party, and they're incredibly affordable.

I was able to buy two dozen silk lei necklaces from a party store for about $10 and kept them by my door. I gave one to each guest as he or she arrived.

(Yes...even Hudson Riverton got one!)

I also went to a local 99-cent store and bought a few stems of silk hibiscus flowers that I cut down and used both for table decorations and to give to my guests to tuck into their hair.

The Perfect Tiki Party Playlist
Finally (and possibly most important of all!) don't forget the music! Every tiki party needs an amazing playlist. You can check out streaming sites for a premade one.

The genre of music best associated with tiki parties is called "Exotica," which is a super fun and weird mix of tropical sounds with beach and wild animal noises. Look up artists like Martin Denny for a perfect example of this.

Other songs and musicians to consider include: Don Ho (of course!), Elvis Presley (especially the soundtrack to the movie Blue Hawaii!), Henry Mancini for great jazzy lounge music, Louis Prima's version of I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book, The Beach Boys, Santo & Johnny, The Tornadoes, and The Polynesians.

I hope that this inspires you to throw your own tiki theme party!

Mixed Berry Vodka Party Punch #Punch4Everybody

I'm not sure why it is, but Memorial Day kind of catches me by surprise every year. Obviously I always *know* it's coming in some kind of vague end-of-May-ish kind of way, but it still always feels like a treat. After just a few weeks of spring...and roughly 37 months of brutal winter (give or take), the idea that summer is (un)officially starting is basically too exciting for my brain to believe.

You guys, let me just reiterate this: it's practically summer!

I come alive during this season. Gorgeous weather, sunny days, and endless excuses to get together and celebrate with my favorite people. And Memorial Day? It's the start of all that fun.

I've once again teamed up with Smirnoff to inspire you with recipes and ideas for the upcoming summer party season.

And this year? It is ALL ABOUT the punch recipes. I've been kind of obsessed with punch for a while now, and think that you should be, too. It is the ultimate summer party beverage.

Partially because it gives me an excuse to pull out my vintage punch bowls and beverage dispensers (no shame...I love my props!), but even more so because it takes a lot of pressure off the host (aka...me).

There is nothing better than putting out a gorgeous punch, and letting guests help themselves. It gives them something to do as they arrive, and leaves you to finish up those last-minute party tasks.

(In my case, that's usually my make-up...)

First up, this bright and gorgeous Mixed Berry Vodka Party Punch, which gets that gorgeous color from real pureed berries, and an added boost of flavor from Smirnoff Raspberry.

Some fresh lemon juice, a bit of sugar, and fizzy lemon-lime seltzer round out the super simple ingredients. It's tart and refreshing, and absolutely perfect for all those warm weather celebrations. Garnished with fresh berries, it's an elegant, but super easy signature drink that will please a crowd.

Happy Memorial Day, friends!

Festive Finds with Nespresso and Sur la Table

Holiday gift ideas

Earlier this month, I surprised my mom with a mini birthday/early-holiday shopping spree in the city. I was able to do this thanks to Nespresso® and Sur la Table, who provided me with gift cards and everything I needed to create a special day for her.

I had my mom meet me at my apartment, keeping the plan a secret until we arrived at our first destination--the Nespresso Boutique & Cafe on Madison Avenue. She was amazed with the shop from the moment we walked in (her actual words: "This is like coffee...elevated.").

Alejandra Ramos
We started off with a light lunch, and then finished off with a couple cozy mugs of coffee from the amazing variety on their menu.

(I chose the coffee of the month, which was an amazing cinnamon honey latte that I plan to recreate on here soon). I then had a car service take us back across Central Park over to the Sur la Table store located in the Hearst Tower on 57th Street.

We spent a couple hours in the shop first browsing, and then finally making our choices for the items we wanted. With the holidays coming up, we both stocked up on a few entertaining basics, but then also picked a out a few fun gift items for ourselves (admittedly one of my favorite parts of holiday shopping!).

We then bundled back into the car with our packages, and headed back to my apartment for dinner and to go over our goodies. Just before she left for the evening, I gave my mom one final surprise--her very own Nespresso® VertuoLine® machine!

Here are my favorite Festive Finds from our shopping trip:

holiday gift guide
1. Gold-Rim Coupe Glasses
I've been searching for a set of vintage style gold-rimmed coupes for ages! The minute I saw them, I practically yelped before grabbing the box. So gorgeous for holiday entertaining--even the simplest cocktail looks super festive served in one of these.

2. Gold Wire Napkin Rings
A little sparkle is the quickest way to glamor to your table setting. No need to buy all new napkins--just switch out your napkin rings and you have a whole new look!

3. Rocco Brushed Gold Flatware Set of 5
Are you sensing a theme here? I've been obsessed with gold flatware for a while now, and this set is particularly lovely. Adds warmth and elegance to the dinner table.

4. Urban Accents Mulling Spices
Add these to a bottle of wine or a jug of store-bought cider, and simmer. Your house will smell incredible, and it's also a wonderful thing to serve guests who are coming in (or heading out into) the cold.

5. Linen Kitchen Apron
I thought I'd had my fill of new aprons until I saw (and felt!) these. The linen is so soft, but still sturdy enough to protect your clothing. Perfect for both hosting and everyday wear. (They also make tablecloths, napkins, and runners in this same fabric!)

6. Nespresso® VertuoLine®
This gorgeous machine makes both classic espresso AND full cups of American-style coffee. The quality and flavors are incredible. I have the red one, and I gave my mom the chrome. All are sleek and gorgeous.

7. Organic Serve Bowls
I fell in love with these the minute I saw them. Hand-made in Portugal, they have a natural imperfect shape that adds casualness to the table. Perfect for salads, roasted vegetables, or other sides. I got them in gray, but the white is also lovely.

8. Winterberry Wreath
Sur la Table sells a variety of beautiful natural wreaths, but this fresh juniper one covered in a mix of real dried and faux red berries is my favorite (red + gold is my thing this year!).

9. Nespresso® Aeroccino 3 Black Milk Frother
If you follow me on Instagram, you might see that I'm a little bit obsessed with super frothy cream on my coffee. (Seriously. OBSESSED.) I have this whole ritual every morning of steaming and frothing the cream. It's the perfect way to start the day. This handy little gadget both heats up and froths your milk or cream (non-dairy milks, too!) so you don't need to fuss with the stove or microwave. Kind of amazing.

10. Gold Flake Truffles
I've long loved Charbonnel et Walker truffles--they always come in such gorgeous little packages and are delicious. These are flaked with real edible gold. A unique and memorable gift for your favorite party host or tuck it into your favorite chocolate lover's Christmas stocking!

11. Peppermint Mug
A set of these festive red and white striped candy cane mugs would be perfect for your morning mug of coffee or a late night hot chocolate (add a shot of espresso to make a mocha!).

5 Cool Things to Do with Ice Pops

I'm not sure if you knew this, but ice pops? Totally not just a summer thing.

In fact, I actually think they're sort of a perfect winter treat. Think about it.

Chilly days usually mean hearty, heavy dishes. Stews. Roasts. Bowls of piping hot mac & cheese. Heavy, filling dishes that are perfect for the season, but which don't often leave a lot of room for a big dessert.

And yet...dessert is important. It's kind of my life philosophy...

Enter ice pops! Light, fresh, and not overwhelmingly sweet. The perfect way to brighten up a cozy winter meal.

Outshine (previously known as Edy's Fruit Bars) recently sent me a couple boxes of their new seasonal winter flavors to try.

I didn't even realize that they did this, but I'm kind of in love with the idea. Each season, Outshine puts out a couple limited-edition flavors inspired by the season.

For winter, it's all about the citrus with their gorgeous Blood Orange and Grapefruit Fruit Bars. Made with real fruit juice and no funky ingredients, they're totally a light dessert that I can get behind.

As delicious as they are on their own, I thought I'd play around and share a few ideas for how you can serve these ice pops to your friends or guests when entertaining this winter.

1. Dip it in Chocolate!
Chocolate and orange is one of my favorite flavor combinations, so as soon as I got these Blood Orange Outshine Fruit Bars, I knew I had to dip them.

To make, combine a cup of chocolate chips (dark, milk, white--choose your favorite!) with 1 rounded teaspoon of coconut oil and melt in the microwave, 30 seconds at a time, until smooth.

Dip the ice pop in the chocolate and place on a plate to set.

It'll harden in just a few seconds, creating a crackling chocolate shell (similar to "magic shell").

These can be prepared a few hours in advance, which is perfect for an easy (and unexpected!) holiday dessert.

2. Add a Little Sparkle
One of my favorite breakfast treats is a half grapefruit sprinkled with raw sugar. I love the way the tart fruit contrasts against the slightly caramel-like flavor of the crunchy sugar crystals.

I used Outshine's other seasonal winter ice pop, Grapefruit, to try to recreate a fun dessert version of this breakfast classic.

To make, I simply dipped the end of the grapefruit popsicle in water and then rolled it around in raw sugar. I popped them back in the freezer for a couple minutes to set, and the results were just like I remembered.

The perfect combination of fresh, tart, citrus fruit with just a hint of caramel. And so sparkly--I think this would be a fun one to serve on New Year's Eve or at a glitter-themed bridal shower.

3. Spice (and spike!) it Up
Margaritas might get all the attention, but my favorite Mexican cocktail is the Paloma (Spanish for "the dove.") It's a tequila-based cocktail made with grapefruit juice or soda, and served with a spicy and salty rim.

I used the Outshine Grapefruit Fruit Bars (which really do taste like fresh grapefruit!) to recreate a grown-up ice pop version of this cocktail.

To make, I dipped the tip of the ice pops in white tequila and then immediately rolled them around in a mix of ground cayenne and salt. (You can also dip in lime juice for a non-alcoholic version, if you prefer.)

If you're not a fan of spice, use chili powder mixed with salt, which adds smokiness without the heat. (Or make some of each!)

Keep these in the freezer until you're ready to serve.

(And this should go without saying, but just in case...these are for grown-ups only, OK?)

4. Add a Little Coconut & Cream
Do you know what's unexpectedly delicious? Fruit ice pops dipped in heavy cream.

I don't know how I discovered this, but I somehow realized that by dipping icy fruit pops into plain heavy cream, it would create an instant creamy shell around the outside.

It's a delicious foil to tart citrus flavors, and works especially well with these blood orange popsicles. I then like to take it even further by dipping it in ground coconut. (Yup!)

It's the most perfect tropical combination of flavors and will make you forget that it's cold and wintery out there.

To make, simply prepare a shallow dish with finely ground coconut (I used the unsweetened kind), and fill a glass with heavy cream.

Dip about two inches of the ice pop into the cream and shake off the excess, letting it set for a few seconds, before pressing it into the coconut.

Place on a wax-lined plate and freeze for 5 minutes, or until set.

5. Bring on the Bubbly!
I love a good champagne cocktail, and this is really as good (and easy!) as it gets.

Arrange ice pops in cocktail or wine glasses, and top off with your favorite champagne or sparkling wine.

I used a mix of the blood orange and grapefruit Outshine bars, since it created a nice mix of colors (and both work beautifully with the bubbly!).

The wine will dissolve the ice pop and you'll end up with a glass of the most delicious, chilly, sweet and tangy beverage ever! Seriously...you'll never want to waste your time with a mimosa again.
